| Notes |
- According to Clybank Memories Newton was a civil war veteren and was captured at the Battle of Franklin in November 1864 and was held until the end of the war. When the southern position was overun Newton layed down in a crook of a rail fence among the dead but he was found anyway. He related to his grandchildren that when the battle ended one could walk for a mile in any direction without stepping on the ground. The ground was covered in bodies.
