- A Milledgeville Newspaper article regarding a run-away slave and from that
time period states that Joel D. Newsom lived just south of Powellton on
the Sparta road. This location would have placed him as a close neighbor
of his father Isaac Newsom (husband of Mary " Molly" Dortch). Census records
further indicate that he lived next door to his father. In 1833, Judge
Joel Dortch Newsom moved his family from Hancock Co. to his newly built
plantation home "Nutwood" in Lagrange, Troup Co., GA (this home still stands,
as does the original kitchen and loom house). There are multiple historical
records in LaGrange regarding Judge Joel D. Newsom's family and his home.
About two hundred feet from the house is the family cemetery which contains
the gravesite of Joel Dortch Newsom. His Bible record (now in the hands
of the DAR) gives his full name and gives the birth dates for all of his
siblings and death dates of his mother and father. This Bible record even
list his half brother Isaac Dortch who was conceived when Mary "Molly"
Dortch was raped by Isaac Hilliard in 1764 (reportedly on the plantation
grounds of his father William Hilliard in Edgecombe Co., NC). Isaac Hilliard
of "Woodlawn" plantation in Nash Co., NC acknowledged his biological son,
Isaac Dortch, in his will. Martha Newsom, mentioned in Wm. Alford, Sr's.
will, was Martha "Patsy" Alford the wife of John Newsom (Joel Dortch Newsom's
brother); they married 1807 in Hancock Co., GA. Joel Dortch Newsom also
listed the full names of his children in his Bible; the middle name of
one of his daughters is "Dortch". Thus, the Joel D. Newsom of Wm. Alford's
will was one and the same as Joel Dortch Newsom (son of Isaac Newsom and
wife Molly Dortch). Isaac Newsom was a son of Joel Newsom of Northampton
Co., NC as proven by Joel's will and the will of Joel's sister, Anne Newsom
Hilliard, (the mother of Isaac Hilliard who raped Molly Dortch). There
was another Joel D. Newsom that lived in either Greene Co. or Putnam Co.,
GA during this same time period. He was Joel David Newsom and was a very
distant cousin of Joel Dortch Newsom. FYI: The town of Dortches is still
located in Nash Co., NC very near the old plantation site of "Woodlawn";
all that is left of this plantation is the Hilliard family cemetery.
